WECO Builds Regional Reach Through Technical Partnerships
Dominican Olympic pool renovation shows how the Puerto Rican company combines specialized materials with field support and why that experience matters to builders at home
At Santo Domingo’s Centro Olímpico Juan Pablo Duarte, the renovation of an Olympic-size pool required more than a new finish. Water exposure, heavy use and a demanding delivery schedule made the choice of installation materials and the support behind them central to this important job in the Dominican Republic.
For Puerto Rico’s WECO, the project illustrates how its regional expansion is being built through technical expertise and partnerships on the ground.
The renovation, associated with this summer’s Central American and Caribbean Games, was promoted by the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation, known as MIDEREC, with Antillean Construction as the general contractor. Marmotech handled material specifications and supply, commercial coordination and project support. WECO supplied specialized installation solutions and provided technical assistance during the installation.
Marmotech’s commercial relationship with WECO began in late 2024, according to Altagracia Isa, its director of commercial operations and brands. With more than 30 years of experience supplying finishing materials to the Dominican construction market, Marmotech sought to broaden its portfolio with a partner able to contribute product quality, technical knowledge and responsive service.
“For us, a commercial alliance is not limited to adding a brand to our portfolio,” Isa says. “It means having a partner who responds, contributes technical knowledge and becomes involved in projects alongside our team.”
The pool renovation put that relationship into practice. The project included a large deck, and the selected porcelain tile needed installation materials suited to the conditions of the work. Isa says Marmotech recommended WECO’s W3000 ZERO tile adhesive for its water resistance and WECO W705 Epoxy Color 2K grout to help prevent stains and mildew.
“Our export business is growing through relationships with partners who understand their markets and need dependable solutions for their projects. The opportunity is to make the knowledge we gain across markets useful to every customer we serve.”
Ana Bido, WECO’s director of exports
WECO describes W3000 ZERO as a polymer-modified thin-set mortar formulated for low-absorption tile and water-immersion applications. WECO W705 Epoxy Color 2K is a two-component epoxy grout and mortar identified by the manufacturer as suitable for submerged installations, with resistance to water, stains and mildew. Together, the products address the distinct bonding and joint-filling requirements of the tiled assembly.
New Chapter
Isa identifies field support as a deciding factor. WECO specialists traveled from Puerto Rico to assist at the site, helping guide installation and the proper application of the selected materials. The team also faced competition from major brands, substantial material volumes and a tight delivery calendar.
“WECO’s active participation during evaluation and installation allowed us to present a sound solution and give the contractor confidence. This experience confirmed that we have an ally willing to support us beyond supplying products.”
Isa points to the combination of product variety, competitive pricing and delivery capacity. For Marmotech, those capabilities support its goal of offering a portfolio of finishing materials in one place. For its customers, she says, the alliance brings access to specialized products and the knowledge of two teams involved from selection through application.
For construction firms in Puerto Rico, the account describes a supplier’s role across project stages: evaluating materials, coordinating supply and supporting installation. Marmotech’s experience offers an example of how that relationship worked under pressure. It also places WECO’s activity in a context relevant to the Island’s industry, where technical decisions and execution shape a project’s outcome.
That evolution began a new chapter in 2013, when WECO joined Grupo Blanco. Over the ensuing 13 years, the company expanded from tile mortars and grouts into specialized construction materials and concrete repair solutions. Its portfolio now spans successive project stages, from substrate preparation and repair through installation and finishing. For local specifiers, that broader offering creates an opportunity to discuss related material choices with a technical team.
WECO Expands Footprint
WECO reports growing business in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Panama and other Caribbean markets. Its regional development also includes production in the Dominican Republic and a commercial presence extending to the mainland United States, according to the company. The value of that reach, executives say, lies in the experience gained working with different partners and project requirements.
“The best projects begin long before the first material is placed; they begin with the decisions made before anyone reaches the jobsite. Our ambition is to compete on quality alongside global brands and to be a resource for the professionals who design, specify and build. Our evolution is measured by the value we can bring to their projects.”
Jorge Muñoz, WECO’s general manager
The Olympic pool project puts those ambitions in context. Material selection, delivery coordination and assistance during installation were all part of the work described by Marmotech. Those details give substance to the company’s account of its evolution and explain how a regional partnership contributed to a construction assignment.
For Puerto Rico’s construction industry, WECO’s regional expansion is a story of a local manufacturer developing capabilities across markets.
The Santo Domingo renovation gives that story a reference: materials, field assistance and a partner’s account of the collaboration. Its significance at home lies in what that experience reveals about the company’s development. WECO publishes product and technical information at wecosolutions.com.
