SAN JUAN — NBA legend and entrepreneur Carmelo Anthony is reaffirming his ties to Puerto Rico as he prepares to serve as ambassador for the 2026 YMCA Invitational Golf Tournament, a fundraising event aimed at supporting programs for children, young people and families across the island.

The tournament will take place Friday, Aug. 28, at the Hyatt Grand Reserve Golf Club in Río Grande, bringing together participants, corporate sponsors and community partners to raise funds for YMCA San Juan.

Anthony, a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, said his Puerto Rican roots are central to his involvement in the initiative.

“I’ve always felt tremendous pride in my Puerto Rican roots, and I’m honored to be able to give back in a meaningful and positive way alongside YMCA San Juan,” Anthony said. “Their work and the impact they have on children and families in our community is a cause I deeply connect with.”

Anthony added that he hopes his participation can help create opportunities and leave a lasting impact on a community that holds personal significance for him.

Using Sports to Invest in Puerto Rico’s Youth

Under the theme “Your Swing and Carmelo Anthony’s Change Lives,” proceeds from the tournament will support YMCA programs focused on education, wellness, youth leadership, sports and community development.

The YMCA Invitational Golf Tournament is one of the nonprofit organization’s main fundraising initiatives, providing businesses and individual participants an opportunity to directly support its community programs.

“Having Carmelo Anthony as our ambassador allows us to amplify the message of our mission and, above all, generate greater awareness about the importance of investing in our children and youth,” said Pelegrín Vargas Vargas, executive director of YMCA San Juan.

Vargas said every participant, sponsor and partner contributes to the organization’s broader goal of creating opportunities and strengthening communities.

An Opportunity for Corporate Participation

Beyond individual golfers, YMCA San Juan is encouraging corporate sponsors and business partners to participate in the tournament.

The fundraising model connects Puerto Rico’s business community with programs designed to provide educational, recreational and developmental opportunities for younger generations.

The organization said registration and sponsorship opportunities remain available ahead of the tournament.

Anthony’s involvement also adds another chapter to his relationship with Puerto Rico, this time leveraging his profile beyond basketball to support philanthropy and community development.

For the former NBA star, the objective extends beyond a single tournament.

“I’m proud to be part of this tournament and contribute to creating opportunities for our community,” Anthony said, “leaving a lasting impact in a place that means so much to me.”
