Ponce Health Sciences University and Puerto Rico’s Department of Education have partnered to provide psychology students with internships in public schools, helping prepare future mental health professionals while strengthening student support services.
PONCE — Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) and Puerto Rico’s Department of Education have signed a new affiliation agreement that will allow psychology students to complete internships and clinical training in public schools across the island.
The agreement was formalized by PHSU President Gino Natalicchio and Education Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés, with the goal of strengthening the preparation of future mental health professionals while expanding support services for school communities.
Under the partnership, students enrolled in PHSU’s Master’s programs in School Psychology and Clinical Psychology, as well as its Doctor of Psychology program, will gain hands-on experience through internships within the Department of Education.
“At Ponce Health Sciences University, we firmly believe that partnerships between academia and government are essential to transforming lives,” Natalicchio said in a statement.
During his visit to the university, Ramos Parés met with university leadership to discuss academic, clinical and research initiatives. He also toured PHSU’s nursing simulation laboratory, auditorium and The Clinics at PHSU, which provides dental services and clinical training facilities.
“This agreement strengthens our School Psychology Program by creating new opportunities for future professionals to contribute their talent and commitment to service in our public schools,” Ramos Parés said.
He emphasized that students’ social and emotional well-being is fundamental to their academic and personal development.
“When academia and government work together, we expand our ability to meet students’ needs and continue strengthening the services available in our school communities,” he added.
PHSU offers academic programs in medicine, clinical psychology, biomedical sciences, public health, nursing and dental medicine.
