Revenues from the visit are estimated at $1 million
Puerto Rico’s southern region is poised for a significant tourism windfall next year with the arrival of Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world.
The Puerto Rico Tourism Company (CTPR) confirmed that the ship will make two calls at the Port of Ponce on March 31 and April 14, 2027, generating an estimated $1 million in direct economic impact.
Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said the inclusion of Ponce in the ship’s inaugural itinerary signals growing confidence from major cruise operators and strengthens Puerto Rico’s competitive position in the Caribbean cruise market. With capacity for 7,000 passengers and a crew of 2,350, the Legend of the Seas represents one of the most substantial single‑day tourism injections the region can receive.
CTPR Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel noted that the calls will benefit a broad cross‑section of the local economy, including restaurants, retailers, tour operators, transportation providers, and small businesses across Ponce and neighboring municipalities. She added that the visits align with the agency’s strategy to expand cruise activity beyond San Juan and accelerate development of regional ports.
The Port of Ponce has been working to position itself as a viable stop for large vessels, and the 2027 calls are expected to reinforce that effort. Each visit will bring thousands of visitors ashore between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., offering a concentrated window of commercial activity for the city’s tourism and service sectors.
Industry officials view the announcement as a sign that Puerto Rico’s regional ports are gaining traction with cruise lines seeking diversified Caribbean itineraries, a trend that could translate into sustained economic growth for the south coast. If
