The new cryptocurrency, known as STPS, was is available through the decentralized exchange Uniswap
Puerto Rican technology company STEPS Puerto Rico Corp. (STPSPR) announced Monday the launch of what it describes as the island’s first Puerto Rican-owned utility cryptocurrency, alongside a portfolio of digital platforms that the company says could generate more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The new cryptocurrency, known as STPS, was developed entirely by Puerto Rican professionals and is now available through the decentralized exchange Uniswap, according to the company. STPSPR said the token can be acquired through wallets developed on the Avalanche blockchain ecosystem and has received approval from Stripe Crypto, a move the company said provides additional security and credibility for users.
The cryptocurrency launch forms part of a broader strategy by STEPS Puerto Rico Corp. to create what it describes as a circular digital economy based on a network of interconnected technology platforms focused on transportation, education, tourism, e-commerce and gaming.
Among the company’s flagship projects is TiMi, a Puerto Rican-owned ride-hailing and transportation application designed not only to provide point-to-point transportation services but also to support tourism and small businesses. Company officials announced that driver recruitment has begun in the municipalities of Isabela and Caguas, with plans to expand into additional areas across Puerto Rico. The platform is intended to create opportunities for individuals seeking supplemental income through self-employment.
The company also unveiled ElSo Club, an online training and certification platform offering educational courses, and De Una, a digital marketing and promotional tool aimed at supporting tourism and economic development initiatives. According to STPSPR, services provided through De Una will be integrated with the TiMi ecosystem.
Another component of the company’s digital portfolio is Cuponex, an online multi-vendor marketplace designed to facilitate e-commerce transactions. Meanwhile, its gaming division, Meta V Games, is developing online games and applications, including what the company describes as the first virtual reality cockfighting arena in Puerto Rico and globally. The platform is expected to feature virtual arenas modeled after locations in Puerto Rico and other countries.
According to Gavino J. Rivera Ramos, the company’s vice president of operations and sales, the launch represents more than the introduction of new technology products. He said the initiative also opens opportunities for investors through the purchase of licenses and company shares.
Rivera said information regarding the company’s governance structure, tokenomics model and investment opportunities is available through its corporate websites.
The executive added that STEPS Puerto Rico already has a corporate presence in Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Spain, and holds operating licenses for markets in Colombia, Panama, Mexico, Madrid, and the U.S. states of Texas and Florida.
Company officials said the combination of the cryptocurrency and its related technology platforms is designed to promote economic activity in Puerto Rico while expanding the export of technology-driven services to international markets.
