Banesco USA has appointed veteran banker Humberto González as Senior Vice President and Director of Corporate Banking in Puerto Rico, as part of the institution’s efforts to expand its commercial lending and corporate banking footprint on the island.

The appointment comes as the Miami-based bank seeks to grow its presence among Puerto Rico’s business community, particularly in commercial real estate and commercial and industrial lending, two sectors that continue to demand financing amid ongoing economic development initiatives.

A role built on 25 years of experience

González, who brings more than 25 years of banking experience, will be responsible for leading Banesco USA’s corporate banking business on the island, overseeing relationship management teams, identifying new lending opportunities and expanding relationships with existing and prospective corporate clients. He will also supervise the bank’s corporate loan portfolio, credit approval processes and key profitability and performance metrics.

The executive joins Banesco USA after a lengthy career at Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, where he held several senior positions over a 15-year period. Most recently, he served as Vice President and Manager of the Corporate Credit Division, overseeing the structuring, evaluation and management of credit transactions across multiple industries. Before that, he worked in Banco Popular’s Corporate Credit Division and Commercial Banking Center for the Northern Region.

Before joining Banco Popular, González spent 12 years at Citibank, N.A., where he served in corporate banking and commercial real estate roles, working with institutional clients and participating in financing transactions involving residential construction, commercial properties, energy projects and telecommunications ventures.

Strategy and leadership

The appointment reflects Banesco USA’s strategy of strengthening its leadership team as competition intensifies among financial institutions serving Puerto Rico’s middle-market and corporate sectors.

“This appointment represents an important step in our growth strategy in Puerto Rico and reinforces our commitment to continue strengthening our capabilities to meet the needs of local businesses,” said Maritza Abadía, president of Banesco USA in Puerto Rico. “Humberto’s experience, market knowledge, and track record will be key to identifying new business opportunities, expanding our relationships with the business sector, and supporting our clients in their growth and expansion plans.”

For González, the new role presents an opportunity to help advance financing options for Puerto Rico’s private sector at a time when businesses are seeking capital to expand and modernize operations.

What the hire means for clients

“Puerto Rico presents significant opportunities to continue strengthening financing for the business sector,” González said. “I’m excited to join Banesco USA at this growing stage and to contribute my experience in developing long-term relationships, offering financial solutions that support our clients’ projects and goals.”

Banesco USA has been steadily expanding its operations following a recent acquisition that broadened its capabilities, including the growth of its Small Business Administration lending platform and a larger presence in the Greater Tampa Bay region. The bank reported $5.9 billion in assets as of Sept. 30, 2026, and operates six banking centers across South Florida and Puerto Rico.

The institution serves commercial real estate companies, small and middle-market businesses and domestic and international clients through a range of lending, deposit and treasury management services.

By bringing on an executive with deep experience in corporate credit and commercial banking, Banesco is positioning itself to capture a larger share of Puerto Rico’s business financing market while supporting the growth ambitions of local companies.

The hire also signals confidence in Puerto Rico’s corporate sector, as lenders continue to compete for opportunities in industries ranging from real estate and infrastructure to energy, telecommunications and manufacturing.
