San Juan- Puerto Rico has surpassed its all-time cruise passenger record — and the fiscal year isn’t over yet.

The Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) announced Wednesday that the island received 1,827,010 cruise passengers through the end of May, eclipsing the previous record of 1,814,157 set in fiscal year 2019. The figure includes arrivals at both the Port of San Juan and the Port of Ponce.

With preliminary projections pointing to roughly 100,000 additional passengers before the fiscal year closes, the island is on track to finish the year approximately 6% above its prior peak.

“At the Tourism Company we are very proud, because we have worked hard to achieve this milestone,” said PRTC Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel. “This historic cruise passenger record reflects the positive results of the efforts we have been making, in collaboration with other public and private sector agencies, to keep Puerto Rico at the forefront of the international market.”

Broader Tourism Picture

The cruise milestone is part of a wider momentum story for Puerto Rico’s tourism sector. The island’s main airports processed 13.6 million passengers in 2025, and hotel occupancy has improved during traditionally softer demand periods. On the air connectivity front, JetBlue expanded its Puerto Rico routes, Iberia added 14 weekly frequencies on its Madrid–San Juan route, and the island was selected as the Principal Partner for FITUR 2026 — Spain’s international tourism trade fair.

Puerto Rico also secured high-profile events including the World Baseball Classic, the Puerto Rico Open, and the 2026 Caribbean Series (Clásico del Caribe), scheduled for December.

‘If There Are Fewer Mouths, We Sell Less Food’: MIDA Sounds the Alarm on Emigration, Ozempic Diets and a Shrinking Consumer Base

San Juan — The last time Puerto Rico saw this many people — especially young people — considering leaving the island was in the wake of Hurricane María in 2017 and the 2019 earthquakes. That’s the sobering benchmark Richard Valdés, chair of MIDA’s Consumer Radiography Committee, offered Tuesday as he presented findings from the trade […]
