NEW YORK  — Wall Street opened mixed Monday as technology stocks led gains while Microsoft declined following the announcement of another round of job cuts tied to its artificial intelligence strategy.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.06%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.34% and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.70%.

The session also marked a historic moment as President Donald Trump participated in the symbolic opening of the trading day from the Oval Office in a joint ceremony with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq—the first time a sitting U.S. president has done so remotely from the White House.

The event coincided with the launch of a new administration initiative aimed at encouraging vehicle purchases among U.S.-born citizens.

Technology stocks broadly outperformed the market. Oracle rose 1.84%Marvell Technology gained 3.78%Teradynejumped 6.91%Western Digital surged 9.33%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) advanced 6.75%.

Microsoft was the notable exception, falling 1.51% after announcing plans to eliminate approximately 4,800 jobs, or about 2.1% of its global workforce.

The company said the restructuring will primarily affect its Xbox gaming division and is intended to better align operations with the growing impact of artificial intelligence on its business.

Microsoft has been the weakest-performing major technology company this year, with its shares down nearly 19% in 2026 as investors continue to assess the long-term impact of generative AI on the software giant.

In commodities markets, gold rose 0.71% to $4,155 per ounce, while silver gained 2.01% to $62.29 per ounce.
