Puerto Rico Approves $27.7 Million in Tax Credits for Seniors and Pensioners

SAN JUAN — Puerto Rico has approved its first round of refundable tax credit payments for low-income seniors and pensioners, totaling $27.7 million, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón and Treasury Secretary Ángel Pantoja Rodríguez announced Wednesday.

The initial payment covers 59,592 tax returns that have already been processed through the Senior Tax Return (Form 481.1), which became available on July 2.

“We approved a first payroll of $27.7 million in tax credits for residents age 65 and older and pensioners,” González Colón said.

The Department of the Treasury reported receiving 75,202 electronic applications within the first five days of the filing period and expects approximately 190,000 returns to be submitted before the Oct. 14 deadline.

Eligible residents may apply through the SURI online platform or receive assistance at Treasury outreach events held across the island.

Officials also reported continued progress with Puerto Rico’s Relief Check program, with $481.5 million approved for 710,383 taxpayers.

In addition, the Treasury has issued more than $2.32 billion in 2025 income tax refunds to 1.11 million taxpayers, exceeding last year’s total by nearly $149 million during the same period.

The next Treasury assistance fairs will be held Thursday and Friday at AEELA’s headquarters in Hato Rey, with additional events scheduled throughout the island during the week of July 13–18.
