A major flood control project for the Río Grande de Arecibo could now cost more than $500 million, a significant increase from the approximately $174 million estimate reported in 2021.

The information was provided by officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during a recent meeting convened by Héctor “Gaby” González López, senator for the Arecibo District in a statement.

The update represents a critical development for the Río Grande de Arecibo Flood Control Project, one of Puerto Rico’s most significant infrastructure initiatives. Officials said the increase is largely attributed to redesign requirements resulting from changes in terrain conditions caused by multiple weather events over recent decades.

The meeting included representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, officials from Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA), and Arecibo municipal leaders, including Mayor Carlos Rubén Ramírez Irizarry.

Participants also reported that the project’s second phase had been allocated $82 million. After funding design work and technical studies, slightly more than $50 million is estimated to remain available for future stages of the project.

According to the discussion, the Army Corps of Engineers has committed to providing an updated total project cost estimate within the next three months. The revised estimate is expected to help policymakers identify potential funding sources needed to advance the project.

Senator Héctor “Gaby” González López, who chairs the Senate Committee on Planning, Permits, Infrastructure and Urbanism, said the new information provides a clearer picture of the project’s status and highlights the importance of securing the resources required to complete the work. He emphasized the project’s role in improving public safety and supporting long-term economic development in Arecibo.

Local officials view the flood control project as a strategic investment that could significantly reduce flood risks, protect homes and businesses, and create opportunities for commercial and agricultural growth throughout the region.

The meeting is part of an ongoing legislative review authorized by Senate Resolution 388, which directs an evaluation of the project’s status, available funding, implementation challenges, and interagency coordination.

As stakeholders await the updated cost analysis, the project’s future will likely depend on the identification of substantial additional funding to bridge the gap between existing allocations and the newly projected construction costs.
