U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his call again for the Federal Reserve (Fed) on Monday, to cut interest rates, arguing that the U.S. economy should benefit from cheaper borrowing costs than it currently has.

During a Q&A session with reporters aboard the presidential plane, Air Force One, Trump stated that other countries maintained lower rates and asserted that the United States should rank among the nations with the lowest interest rates in the world.

“We should have the lowest interest rate in the world. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t,” said the president, who maintained that a rate cut would stimulate economic growth while reducing borrowing costs for businesses, consumers, and the federal government.

The president’s remarks come a day before the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) begin its monetary policy meeting, where officials will assess inflation, the labor market, and economic growth before deciding on the direction of interest rates.

The Fed’s benchmark rate currently remains within a range of 3.5% to 3.75%, following a series of reductions implemented since late 2025.

President Trump had a tense relationship with Jerome Powell during his first term and, subsequently, repeatedly criticized the central bank for maintaining high interest rates and questioned the monetary policy decisions.

Since Powell’s departure, Trump has voiced support for the new Fed chairman, Kevin Warsh, describing him as a “fantastic” person who shares his preference for a more accommodative monetary policy. Trump Renews Call for Fed Interest Rate Cuts Ahead of Policy Meeting.
