New Beijing rules could impact drone market activity

Beijing — Authorities in China’s capital have introduced new rules that limit the sale, transport, and use of drones in the city. The measures aim to improve safety in low-altitude airspace.

The regulation bans the sale and rental of drones and key parts within Beijing. It also limits bringing drones into the city unless they are already registered.

Users must register their drones with their real names, complete basic training, and get permission before flying outdoors. Since 2025, Beijing has already placed strict controls on drone activity.

Reports confirmed by EFE show that the new rules are already affecting how people buy and move drones. Manufacturers like DJI had warned customers to buy devices before the rules took effect.

Some exceptions apply, including for research, education, public safety, and emergency use, but all require approval from authorities.

These tighter controls come as China’s drone sector continues to grow as part of the “low-altitude economy,” which the government expects to reach more than 2 trillion yuan (about $290 billion) by 2035.
