Bayamón- Puerto Rico Children’s Hospital successfully performed the first pediatric allogeneic bone marrow transplant in Puerto Rico to treat a genetic disease, marking a major milestone in the Island’s healthcare system.
The highly specialized procedure uses stem cells from a donor and allows pediatric patients to receive advanced treatment locally without traveling abroad, helping families remain together during the recovery process.
The transplant was led by Dr. Jhon Guerra Moreno, medical director of Hope Wonders Oncology Care and director of the Pediatric Hematology Oncology Division at Puerto Rico Children’s Hospital.
The procedure was performed on a seven-year-old patient diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and potentially fatal genetic condition if left untreated.
Hospital officials highlighted that the institution now has the infrastructure and clinical capabilities necessary to perform these highly complex procedures through Hope Wonders, its pediatric oncology unit specifically designed for immunocompromised patients under strict safety standards.
The patient is currently showing favorable progress and remains under close medical supervision during recovery.
